Hello, Artenauta! Today we are going to talk about a very useful and necessary color when we are working on portraits or scenes in which people appear: how to make flesh color.

Depending on the way we handle color, we can achieve realistic skin tones, with which we will achieve spectacular results in our works.

Curiosities about flesh color

  • In reality, skin or flesh color as such does not exist. When we talk about flesh color, we are talking about a very wide variety of tones, since the skin does not have only one color (there are lighter, darker skins, different shades and lights to be taken into account…).
  • The term carnation or carme ( which refers to representations of human skin in artistic painting) was defined during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; therefore, it was made based on white skin tones, since at that time the artistic representation of black-skinned people was very scarce.
  • Commonly, we refer to beige as flesh color.
  • Flesh color is associated with nudity, freedom, sociability or sensuality. As negative aspects, it is related to inequality, exclusion and restriction.

How to make flesh color

  • To make the flesh color, we will use the three primary colors (yellow, cyan and magenta), thus obtaining a broken tone that we will lighten with white.
  • In the following video we explain how to do it, step by step:

Understanding and assimilating the Theory of Color is of vital importance in order to work with paint and obtain the desired results, avoiding unnecessary waste of pigments and achieving much more vibrant and realistic finishes.
